Description : |
In Mali, the first phase of the PRS established 151 simplified drinking water supply systems. At a regional meeting held in Bamako at the end of June 1999, the CILSS and the European Commission agreed to launch the second phase of the project, concerning 60 solar pumping systems in Mali. This second phase occurs in a context of reforms of responsibilities of the State, now focusing on regulatory issues and decentralizing management of these mini drinking water supply systems. |

Description of the Actual Services Provided | The feasibility study of the PRS II in Mali featured: * Analysis of the current situation (consumption, operating and maintenance costs, savings, exploitation schemes of the PRS I) * Pre-identification of eligible villages for the PRS II, on the basis of their population, availability of water resources and relevance of needs in drinking water * Socio-economical study of identified villages: exact population and dispersion, water needs, local organization of villages * Economical study: financial and economic profitability of solar pumping, price of water according to a specified cost structure. In particular, the possibility of adding a fee on each m3 of sold water to ensure the sustainability of the system has been studied. * Hydro geological study: on the basis of existing documents, and inventory of water sources has been done in selected villages * Technical study: sizing criteria for solar pumping systems * Optimization of equipments of PRS I, from surveys on a sample of sites * Institutional study |
