Description : |
Following a feasibility study executed by IED, the project aims to develop, for the electrification of Maio island, a wind diesel power plant. The energy produced will be distributed via a MV grid in direction of the southern and western localities of the island, thus providing electricity to 85 % of the population. The villages of the north and east, which only gather 15% of the inhabitants, will be powered by 4 mini grids fed by 4 gensets. The project has a very high wind penetration rate (60%), and a penalty clause if this rate is not reached. A desalination plant is also added to the system, allowing to use the surplus energy produced by the wind/diesel power plant and in parallel partly resolve the serious drinking water supply shortages in the main town of the island, Vila do Maio. The present drinking water supply, sourced by the water table and pumped to the city, is insufficient to meet the demand in addition the water table is rapidly getting depleted and the water is getting saltier. |
