Description : |
The power sector in Kenya relies heavily on hydroelectricity, while the other indigenous power generation resources - geothermal, wind, biomass and coal - are only beginning to be developed. This insufficient diversification in the generation mix has resulted in frequent power shortages and the need for costly petroleum based generation in the recent past due to recurring drought periods. The aim of this technical assistance is to strengthen and improve the planning within the power sector in Kenya. For this LI was contracted by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and the Energy Regulatory Commission. The key tasks include: • Reviewing the potential of Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) and recommendations for implementation and policies. • Development of a power generation and transmission master-plan for the medium and long term, including: • Assessment and forecast of electricity demand; • Assessment of national energy sources; • Assessment and planning of generation and transmission system; • Assessment of planning and investment requirements; • Financial and economic assessment of the plan; • Training of Kenyan counterparts on software tools and planning activities to be employed in the development of the master plan. The above said tasks are aimed at scaling up the contribution of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the energy mix and improvement of the current Least Cost Power Development Plan, and turning it into a Power Master Plan for Kenya. |
