As part of the preparation of its Rural Electrification Development Master Plan (REDMP), the Government of Namibia has commissioned IED to conduct a detailed geospatial analysis, which should be carried out on the basis of good practices and international experience. This work will be used by the World Bank to advise the Namibian Ministry of Mines and Energy. The main objectives of the project are: 1 / Define different optimal electrification solutions at the lowest cost to increase electricity access in rural areas 2 / Provide a solid strategic basis for the implementation of systematic step-by-step network extensions through the use of GIS software; 3 / Promote the deployment of off-grid technologies powered by a renewable energy supply, to enhance the sustainability and profitability of electrification projects. |

Description of the Actual Services Provided | 1 / Geospatial analysis: • Data collection from the main actors of the energy sector (public / private) and integration of data in geographical information systems (GIS); • Spatial characterization of settlement concentrations, identification of electricity supply needs (population services, economic and industrial activities), representation of existing transmission and distribution networks. 2 / Definition of the different electrification options the least expensive using the planning software (GEOSIM): • Linking geographical, technical, social, industrial, economic and financial data to model the options envisaged; • Modeling of all possible electrification options by 2030 in accordance with sectoral priorities for regional and national development; • Modeling options for densification and extension of the existing power grid; • Modeling options for isolated networks (mini-grids) and autonomous systems; • Multi-factorial sensitivity analysis to challenge the proposed options and the resulting modeling. 3 / Capacity building: • Organization of thematic workshops to report IED work and prospective exchanges with energy sector stakeholders; • Transfer of GIS and GEOSIM software licenses and remote training of members of the Ministry of Energy and others national institutions in their use . |
