Description :
CASA TAF is a UK Government Facility (FCDO), implemented with the technical support of Techno Serve, to enhance economic opportunities for smallholder agribusinesses.
Following a study on the agro-circular economy in Senegal, a partnership was set with COPEOL. An initial diagnosis identified the self-production of electricity from a gasification system as an option to be investigated, to improve the profitability of processing plants.
IED conducted feasibility studies at two sites: a groundnut processing plant and a cashew processing project.

Description of the Actual Services Provided The feasibility study focused on waste recovery (peanut shells and cashew nut shells) in two processing plants of the Senegalese manufacturer COPEOL, for the self-production of electricity and coal:

• Biomass Potential Assessment
• Analysis of electricity needs
• Technical evaluation of gasification plants (Dimensioning, location, connection,...)
• Evaluation of the valorization of coal in the form of fuel and agricultural amendment (Biochar): characterization, sector and market study, business plan
• Estimation of capital and operating costs
• Techno-economic modelling according to different processing plant operating scenarios
• Social, carbon and environmental impact assessment
