Description :
This project consists of a double technical assistance on behalf of the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Malawi with the aim of increasing rural electrification in the country. Through the first component, it aims to update the Rural Electrification Master Plan and train the staff of the planning department in the use of geospatial planning tools such as QGIS and GEOSIM. The second component of the project consists of developing tools for the Ministry to strengthen the deployment of off-grid solutions across the country: listing of prerequisites and regulatory and technical criteria for the implementation of mini-grids, development of viable economic models.

Description of the Actual Services Provided The main activities to be carried out are:
1. Technical assistance for the updating of the Rural Electrification Master Plan and the strengthening of the capacities of its planning department (SIG, GEOSIM, update process) through a diagnosis of the institutional environment, the identification of priority electrification projects, the forecasting of electricity demand in non-electrified localities, the identification of low-cost electrification solutions.

2. Technical assistance for the effective deployment of mini-grids including: a list of the technical requirements of mini-grid operators for the Ministry; the development of a standard business model, the development of site monitoring and commissioning tools.

3. A pre-feasibility study for 1 or 2 solar mini-grid projects (demand forecasting, sizing of distribution networks, calculation of the levelized cost of electricity).
