It's official: the 40 MW biomass power plant in Namibia is launched for commissioning in 2027 !

IED carried out the Due Diligence of the AFD loan granted to NamPower for the construction of the plant, and set up the environmental and social support program aimed at the sustainable rehabilitation of savannah lands - financed by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM), and the Mitigation Action Facility (MAF).

The Otjikoto power plant will represent 6% of Namibia's installed capacity, supplied annually by 240,000 tonnes of invasive bush (Acacias), which harvest aims to the savannah land sustainable rehabilitation. The project will structure a responsible biomass supply chain and aims to rehabilitate 600,000 ha (out of more than 15 millions ha invaded today).

Nampower

Our consortium which includes Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF), Namibia Biomass Industry Group (NBiG) and Nitidae will support NamPower to these actions implementation for a 5 years period.

The social objectives are to maximize the positive impacts on the Disadvantaged, Vulnerable and Marginalized Groups (DVMG) through their participatory involvement in harvest and post-harvest activities, and to ensure equitable sharing of benefits between landowners, communities, harvesters, NamPower.

At the environmental level, it will be a question of developing, implementing and evaluating harvesting and post-harvest practices allowing the restoration of grazing land and its productivity; demonstrate the positive impacts on biodiversity (fauna and flora), groundwater recharge and resilience to droughts.

IED supports Zimbabwe in the development of its national energy planning !

IED is starting the study on Zimbabwe's National Integrated Energy Planning, under the aegis of the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, funded by the African Development Bank Group.

Flag of Zimbabwe

This important study, of one year duration, aims to establish the energy trajectory of this southern African country for the next 20 years. All energy vectors will be studied: electricity, coal, bio-energy, petroleum products, etc. as well as all sectors: mining, agriculture, domestic energy, industry...

Our partners SustEnergy and Artelys will support us respectively on the analysis of the national energy system and the modelling of the energy sector using the CEPIA tool. Following the data collection, the IED teams will forecast demand and supply according to 3 scenarios.

The final objective is to propose to the Zimbabwean government a strategic vision and policy briefs allowing to minimize its greenhouse gas emissions, while ensuring the country's economic development and access to modern energy for the entire population.

Zimbabwe will thus be for IED the 3rd country after Mauritania and Cambodia  to demonstrate its excellence in long-term energy planning.

IED Consult implements the Master Plan for Rural Electrification in Mali

To improve its population's access to electricity, Mali has entrusted IED Consult, the updating of its Rural Electrification Master Plan funded by the African Development Bank. This planning work is part of a vast project to overhaul the strategic and regulatory direction in the electricity field. According to optimized technical choices, it will enable Mali to evaluate, plan, mobilize and direct the necessary investments to the areas where electrification will have the greatest socio-economic impact.

New PDER Mali

The study started at the end of 2023, with the realization of more than 1000 field surveys to establish rural demand forecast, and data collection to establish a georeferenced access to electricity database in Mali, cornerstones of a good geospatial planning work with our GEOSIM software!

At the end of the planning, IED Consult will carry out the study of the priority program for the next 5 years, which will lead to the Plan direct implementation.

IED Invest joins ATIBT

IED Invest joins ATIBT- International Tropical Timber Technical Association, to promote wood waste gasification along companies engaged in the sustainable production of tropical timber.

Logo atibt

The ATIBT brings together more than 160 members (industrialists, companies, NGOs, etc.), and acts in favor of the tropical forests sustainable management and for a healthy economy that promotes social development.

IED Invest has become a ATIBT member in order to get closer to the wood processing sector actors, to raise awareness of gasification, to better understand the sector needs and to propose the most suitable solutions.

With its own experience as an operator, IED Invest is a provider of robust and proven solutions for the production of electricity from dry biomass.

Many processing plants in the Congo Basin are closest to logging operations, and electricity generation at these remote sites is mainly from diesel. Recovering wood waste as a substitute for diesel is a lever to improve the profitability and resilience of processing units in Africa. This approach is part of an increase in energy needs, while manufacturers are moving towards a more advanced transformation in Africa, synonymous of more local added value.

Please note that we, IED Invest, will be present at the next Carrefour International du Bois de Nantes from 28 to 30 May 2024 tradeshow in Nantes.

Growth and big ambitions for IED !

BFM

IED was in the spotlight in the BFM Business television channel TV show « Focus PME », hosted by Vincent Touraine.

Every week-end, Focus PME is the meeting place for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises. Host Vincet Touraine welcomes business leaders and founders who stand out in their sector.

Anjali Shanker, IED Managing Director, was the guest of the show on April 06, 2024. During this interview, she presented the historical vision of IED specialized in renewable energy projects and access to electricity services in Africa and Asia. IED has carried out many projects and overcome many challenges, which has led to an annual growth of 8% for more than 20 years.

It is its ambitions and innovations that allowed IED to create IED Invest ten years ago, which develops hydropower plants and electricity from biomass sources on the African and Asian continents.

This innovative approach is also reflected by software development and financing methods, including carbon finance, as well as for example, the payment of electricity bills by mobile phone in Africa according to the principle of Mobile Money.

IED is now looking for partners interested in societal impact as well as financial returns, and also passionate and committed collaborators.
